What is an Arizona REAL ID?

An Arizona REAL ID is an enhanced version of your driver license that meets federal security standards for identification. It’s marked by a black or gold star in the upper right corner, showing it’s TSA-compliant.

Starting May 7, 2025, only a REAL ID, U.S. passport, or other TSA-approved identification will be accepted at airport security checkpoints for domestic flights and certain federal facilities.

Why Get an Arizona REAL ID Driver License?

While it’s not mandatory, having a REAL ID can save time and hassle, especially if:

  • You frequently travel within the United States and prefer not to carry a passport or other documents that are hard to replace if lost.
  • You need to enter a federal building or military base.
  • You want to avoid making a second trip if you choose to upgrade later.

What Documents Are Required?

To get a Travel ID Driver License for the first time, bring the following documents to verify your identity, legal presence, and Arizona residency, along with an Arizona Driver License application:

  • Arizona Driver License Application
  • Original US birth certificate or current U.S. passport or
    Other acceptable identification documents
  • Two (2) proofs of Arizona residency: Acceptable documents include a utility bill, mortgage statement, lease agreement, school transcript, or government-issued documents that show your name and current address. No shipping labels or invoices.

Depending on your circumstances, additional documents may be necessary. For example, a marriage certificate or divorce decree could be required to validate a legal name change. Names must match across all documents. Please bring originals. Contact us for further assistance!

Statewide, temporary credentials are issued for immediate use until the official ones arrive in the mail from ADOT.

Did You Know? The REAL ID is also available in the form of a State ID for non-drivers!

In 2020, ADOT enhanced security by centralizing the distribution of Arizona MVD credentials, such as driver licenses, instruction permits, license plates, car titles, and placards, to name a few!

Once your order is placed and paid for at any MVD or Authorized Third Party office, you’ll receive temporary documents to use until your official credentials arrive in the mail from ADOT.

The post office will not forward mail from ADOT, so make sure your home address is current with USPS®
