IFTA fuel tax reports are typically required to be filed quarterly. Even if no fuel was purchased or no miles were traveled in an IFTA member jurisdiction during a quarter, you still usually need to file a “zero report.”

While the specific requirements can vary by jurisdiction, generally, to qualify for an IFTA account, you need to have a vehicle that is 1) used for transporting goods or passengers (for someone else) 2) has two (2) axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeding 26,000lb, or has three (3) or more axles regardless of weight, or is used in combination and has a combined weight exceeding 26,000lb. 3) Operates in two or more states

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a cooperative agreement between the 48 contiguous states in the US and 10 Canadian provinces to simplify fuel use reporting by motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. Setting up an IFTA account allows you to report and pay taxes on the fuel usage across states/provinces through a single report, helping to streamline the administrative process and ensure compliance with interstate fuel tax laws.
